DICOM Anonymizer

The DICOM anonymizer is a software tool that removes or masks patient-identifying information from medical images, including metadata and any burned-in text, so datasets can be safely shared or analyzed. It is used by hospitals, researchers, and AI developers handling sensitive imaging data. Collective Minds (CM) offers an evaluation-only solution to test anonymization workflows; it does not provide full clinical deployment or compliance guarantees.

How Collective Minds DICOM Anonymizer Works

The Collective Minds DICOM anonymizer goes beyond basic tag stripping—using AI-driven pixel masking to automatically detect and remove sensitive information wherever it appears, including difficult cases like burned-in annotations in ultrasound, MRI, and CT images. Instead of blindly removing all text, it intelligently distinguishes between patient identifiers and clinically relevant data, preserving diagnostic value while ensuring privacy.

We advise you to refrain from using patients' personal data or PHI that has not been previously cleared. Please note that we disclaim any responsibility or liability in the event that these instructions are not followed.

This demo is provided as-is for evaluation/marketing purposes only. It is not a production service, not for clinical use, and comes with no SLA or warranties.

AI-Driven Pixel Masking for Ultrasound, MRI & CT

Looking to anonymize DICOM files quickly and securely? Evaluate our technology with a free demo to try our DICOM anonymization capabilities — including AI driven Ultrasound (US) pixel masking and metadata handling.

Please note, this is NOT a production service and is provided as-is without warranties.

By submitting files and using this service, you accept the DPA/BAA and represent that you have a lawful basis/authorization (GDPR/HIPAA) to provide this data for processing solely to anonymize, preview, and export; processing is limited to this job and ends no later than 60 minutes after completion, when files are deleted.

Key Features of the DICOM Anonymizer

  • Fast & Efficient DICOM: Anonymization Process large batches of DICOM files in seconds.

  • AI-Driven Pixel Masking: Detects and masks identifiers rendered in pixel data (e.g., burnt-in texts, Patient IDs, etc.).

  • Standards-Aligned by Design: Built to support GDPR- and HIPAA-aligned workflows and DICOM conventions for secure handling, detecting, and masking or removing PHI/PII as needed/required.

  • Preserves Technical Metadata: Retains non-identifying parameters and critical tags needed for diagnosis/research (e.g., modality, scan settings). This helps meet the sweet spot between data utility and confidentiality.

  • Preview Before Download: Review anonymized DICOM previews before exporting and downloading.

  • Automate End-End Compliant Data Flow: Embed the automatic DICOM Anonymizer capabilities within Collective Minds' End-End Data Flows, from Scanner to Research Results.
The features above describe the enterprise product available for purchase. The demo showcases a subset to help you evaluate performance and fit.

quote

"Effective anonymization in research and medical imaging involves balancing privacy (data protection) with data utility to maintain the data utility while safeguarding patient privacy rights and minimizing re-identification risks. Each case must be evaluated individually, and using a tool optimized for this purpose is essential for success."

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it remove personal/health identifiers?
  • Online Demo: Designed to detect and mask identifiers in pixel data and scrub identifying DICOM tags for evaluation purposes. Results are provided as-is with no warranty.
  • Enterprise: Provides configurable anonymization/de-identification of DICOM headers and pixel data to support GDPR/HIPAA-aligned workflows. Final compliance determinations remain with your organization or could be acquired additionally along with this service.

Will important DICOM technical parameters remain?
  • Online Demo: Non-identifying technical parameters are retained to help you judge diagnostic/research suitability.
  • Enterprise: Retention of technical metadata is configurable so you can preserve clinically/research-relevant parameters while masking identifiers. Find the acceptable balance between the required level of data quality for your clinical/research purposes and the required level of confidentiality/privacy.

Is this DICOM anonymizer free? What are the licensing options?
  • Online Demo: Free as a marketing evaluation tool; not a production service.
  • Enterprise: Licensed offering with commercial terms. Contact Sales for pricing, deployment models, and SLAs.

Who is responsible for uploaded data, and what are the data roles?
  • Online Demo: You are responsible for any data you upload. You must have a lawful basis/authorization (e.g., GDPR Arts. 6 and 9 where applicable; HIPAA where applicable). For the demo, Collective Minds does not act as your data processor/Business Associate.
